As things slowly start to open up, many of us in Vancouver are eager to return to some of the activities we did pre-Covid. We may have stayed active and discovered new activities, but the prospect of returning to some of the sports we love can be exciting.
When returning to sport or activity after a long layoff (for some it’s been over a year) it’s easy to want to do “too much, too soon”. To avoid this common loading error, following these basic principals might be helpful:
- Prep with training sessions in the weeks leading up to your return
- Be gradual and consistent
- Look at your deficits (mobility, strength, movement) and work towards fixing them. They may have changed from what you last remember. You’ve had some time off and you’re now a year older than before
- Always include a dynamic warm-up.
- Don’t return to competition too soon
- Have fun! We tend to move better when we are not stressed.
Likely thanks to our higher vaccination rates, and sensible practices by most people, we have been able to head back to “normal”. Let’s keep it up, team!
